What Motivates Today’s Freelancer Workforce

As the workforce continues to shift towards a gig economy model, it’s becoming clear that there are different motivating factors that drive today’s workers. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center shows that 8% of American adults have earned money from an online employment platform in the last year including ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft,  online tasks, and cleaning services.

However, there are big differences in what motivates full-time, financially reliant on gig work (56% of workers surveyed) and “casual” gig workers (42%) who use the gig economy to make additional income on top of other jobs. For part-time gig workers, it’s all about the flexibility. They want to be able to work when they want and where they want. For full-time workers, freelancer platforms have provided a solution to a lack of other job opportunities. These platforms seem to benefit people earning supplementary income or those lacking other job opportunities the most.
