Help Wanted: How Millennials Look For Work

This week, the AllWork team attended our first Millennial 20/20 Conference where we released the findings of our recent survey, “How Millenials Look for Work”. This summit, based in New York, is a gathering of over 4,000 brands and attendees to discuss the next generation in commerce.

AllWork CEO, Glenn Laumeister gave a presentation on retail talent in the age of technology and highlighted our key learnings from our survey done in conjunction with Women’s Marketing on Millennials and the new path to employment.

The study surveyed 1,000 men and women across three generations—Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers—identifying some of the unique attributes of the Millennial path-to-employment. While companies used to control the way employees applied for jobs, the process has shifted as Millennials research and engage with potential companies and career opportunities.

Key facts from the survey include:

  • The current process is painful, with 42% of Millennials indicating that they would rather sit in traffic than have to go through a job search.
  • 43% of Millennials say bad reviews on sites like Glassdoor would make them not want to apply for a job.
  • Millennials want feedback! 56% said the very worst part of the job hunt is a lack of response and communication from a company.
  • 77% think the most important thing a company can do during their first week of work is to provide them with proper training for a new role.
  • However, only 25% feel that companies always go out of their way to onboard them in a new job.

The findings illustrate how Millennials move throughout the employment funnel, from judging a company based on its public profile (social media, website, job review sites) and the interview process, to the importance of personalized on-the-job training once hired. At its core, the study explores how employers must adapt to recruit and retain the right talent for their business. Companies need to provide transparency to applicants and make the overall application more straight-forward.
